It was the driest summer on record, and all the crops were wilting away. Every farmer in the region was reeling from their losses. Desperate to change his fortunes, Peter Harpole decided to try his luck with poultry farming.

Peter didn’t know much about chickens, but selling eggs would be a great source of food, and hopefully income for him and his family. If he was successful at it!

As the sun got closer to rising over the Harpole farm, Toby, the Harpole’s new rooster, took his place atop a wooden fence next to the barn.

American writer Artie Knapp is the author of many published works for young readers. His children’s book Stuttering Stan Takes a Stand was endorsed by The National Stuttering Association and the American Institute for Stuttering. A frequent contributor to Ovi Magazine, Artie’s children’s literature has also been featured in such publications as The Detroit Free Press, Humpty Dumpty’s Magazine, Lincoln Kids, The Modesto Bee, Kids Turn Central, the Fort Wayne Family Magazine and the Cincinnati Enquirer to name a few. If there were bars on the windows the two-storey Filmer School could be mistaken for a jail. As it is, the brick below the windows is stained from the dripping rain of the years, the front grounds are parched, the trees leafless. It could be autumn or spring, it’s hard to tell. The sense of desertion is everywhere. There is the photographer who took the picture: H.C. Branch of Webster, Mass., his name burned into the lower right-hand corner of the photograph as well as printed below that. In the upper right-hand corner of the photograph the Stars-and-Stripes is waving in the wind - the flag would have been flying atop its pole only when school was in session. That’s what the photograph says. In 1919-1920 Edgar Wallace wrote a series of ten short stories featuring the investigative reporter York Symon for publication in the British monthly The Novel Magazine. In 1928 the series was reprinted in Pearson's Weekly. "The Reporter" is a detective story about a police reporter named Wise Symon and his tricks of the trade.
